Texas appeared to have cornered the market on defensive tackles from the state of Louisiana with commitments from Malcolm Roach, Gerald Wilbon and D'Andre Christmas-Giles, but Charlie Strong and the Longhorns landed their first DT from Texas in explosive Duncanville 4-star Marcel Southall.

With three DT commitments already in hand for Texas in Roach, Wilbon and Christmas-Giles, there was some thought maybe Southall would head north of the Red River to Oklahoma, which got Southall's first official visit in November and seemed to have the lead for months.

But Southall, the first of nearly a dozen uncommitted Texas recruits to announce on National Signing Day, continued the momentum for the Longhorns that began on Tuesday with the commitments of 4-star RB Kyle Porter of Katy and Christmas-Giles, a 3-star DT from St. Augustine HS in New Orleans.

Those two commitments pushed Texas to No. 19 in Scout's national team rankings.

But forget the momentum Southall's signing gave Texas on Wednesday, Southall (6-3, 270) is an explosive, quick-twitch DT with excellent ball-getoff and advanced hand work to disengage from blockers while rushing the quarterback (and did we mention Southall was a DT Oklahoma coveted).

Instead of becoming a Sooner, the Duncanville product will be staring across the line of scrimmage at the Sooners in the Red River Shootout in upcoming years.

Southall's stock continued to rise after a strong performance in the Semper-Fi All-Star Game that also included 2016 Texas signees DE Andrew Fitzgerald and OL Denzel Okafor.

In addition to Oklahoma, Southall took official visits to Texas on Jan. 15, Miami (Fla.) on Jan. 22 and Ole Miss last weekend.
