Welcome to HD Only, HornsDigest’s most in-depth piece of content on Longhorns sports and recruiting news

This is Part 1 of a two-part HD ONLY. Part 2 will be released later tonight.

  1. Is Derrick Tucker a take? Does he have a legit offer our is another Christian Wallace situation?

He absolutely is a take at this point in time, he has to get his grades in order but he is one of the top players in the state of Texas for 2017.  He has a legit offer.  Christian Wallace could not have called up Charlie Strong and pulled the trigger.  That is not the situation with Derrick Tucker.

2. Name a few players who you think have a chance to be the number one recruit in the nation for 2017? Does Texas have a chance with any of them?

Sticking with some players I am aware of at this time.  Najee Harris, Dylan Moses, DeAngelo Gibbs, Foster Sarell and Devon Hunter are all five star kids that could end up the No 1 player in the country on NSD.  I also really like Calvin Ashley the big OT from Florida.

3. Is Coach Strong 100% all in on both Buechele and Sam?  I assume yes, but wanted to get your perspective.  If so, is there a contigency plan at QB should we lose 1 or 2 from our current group plus Sam in the next 12-months.

Heard

Swoopes

Merrick

Buechele

Ehlinger

Swoopes is graduating at the end of 2016.  If Merrick or Heard were to transfer out; that could be catastrophic to some degree.

The answer is yes, absolutely they are all in with Shane & Sam for next season.  If some from that group were to leave or change positions I’m not sure what you would be able to do about it.  “Catastrophic,” is a big word sir and I am not sure that either of those two players are the future at the position so not sure how it would be Catastrophic to the program or not.

4. Which recruits are our top priority in 2017 and what can you tell us about them? Is Dylan Moses a realistic possibility?

Texas has lots of players that are a priority.  Lets start with the four that have announced for the Longhorns, Carson, Tennison, Ehlinger and Miller.  Teams are already coming at this group in a major way trying to get them to decommit from Texas.  Anthony Hines, Baron Brown, Camron Buckley, Marvin Wilson are just a few kids that are also going to be a priority for Texas during this 2017 cycle.  The move by Dylan to IMG Academy is a big blow to LSU for sure.  However, it will not be as easy for him to get to Texas as it once was.  It will be interesting to see if Texas dips back into Florida or not.  My best guess is they more than likely will not but time will tell all.

5. WR J. Ausbon will we offer?

Jhamon Ausbon, 6-foot-2, 200-pound WR from Bradenton (Fla) IMG Academy – another transfer.  He is a Baylor verbal at this time.  The move to Florida will certainly not help Briles and company moving forward. He will not visit Texas for the end of the month Junior day and my guess is Texas will not offer him at this time.  Plenty of WR’s much closer to home.  I don’t think they need to go to IMG Academy to find WR’s for 2017.

6. Can we flip Browning?

I am not predicting he ends up a Longhorn.  However, I will predict he does “Not” end up at Baylor.  So, to answer your question yes Texas could flip him. My first prediction of 2017 is Baron Browning will not end up at Baylor.

7.How's are chances for Dylan Moses, Anthony Hines, and Marvin Wilson? With a good year.

Talked about Moses above. Texas will have a great shot at Hines moving forward.  I expect to see him visit Texas at the end of the month for Junior day.  He is a top priority for Texas at a position of need.  A position they did not land in 2016 increases the chances of Hines in 2017.  Wilson has visited Texas numerous times over the last 24-months.  He will more than likely be one of a small select few inside players to even be recruited by Texas.  Texas will be in this one until the end.  However, all he will hear about for the next 11 months is how many DT’s Texas landed in 2016.

8. How many Jr Days will the staff hold?

I am not even sure.  It seems to me they only had one true junior day last year but I could be wrong.  They may hold another one but I am not sure at this point.

9. Assuming the 2017 class is 25 strong; would Coach Strong prefer to have.....

17-19 filled with commitments prior to end of 2016 season or just shortly afterwards?

Leaving 6-8 spots open for your NSD run!

I would imagine they would like to have around 12 kids committed at the end of the season.

10. A 2017 player I would really like to see Texas land is Camron Buckley. He received some rave reviews during his last camp with Texas. What is the status of his recruitment and his interest in Texas at this point in time?

Cedar Hill has numerous prospects and Buckley is one of the best.  More than likely a top 200 player in the country heading into his senior season.  6-foot, 190-pound WR has offers from TCU, Texas, TT, Houston, SMU, Washington and Colorado to name a few.  I would expect to see his offer list grow and Texas is right there at the top for him heading into his senior season.

As far as new coaches etc..that stuff will become very clear very quickly in my opinion.  These kinds of things need to be announced by the school so we sit and wait.
