"My parents like Texas," he continued. "My sister likes Texas. Both the players and people are really great down there. I like OU too, but Im going to Texas, and this time, Im not changing my mind."
If Smith's commitment does indeed stick, the Horns have 13 verbals and are on the verge of a 14th from Shreveport Evangel DE Chase Pittman, who could announce for Texas this Sunday. Smith is the third linebacker, along with Splendora's Brian Robison and Pflugerville Connally's Marcus Myers, to commit. The Horns will probably take one more LB in the class of '02, and a couple of 'backers where there has been mutual interest remain uncommitted -- Longview's Marvin Byrdsong (the top-ranked LB in the state) and North Mesquite's Aaron Harris. Harris, who has narrowed his list to UT and A&M, is the far more likely candidate of the two to end up in the Orange and White.
Here's the Horns' complete commitment list by position: one QB -- Billy Don Malone; two OLs -- Neale Tweedie, Bret Valdez; one TE -- David Thomas; one WR -- Dustin Miksch; two DTs -- Earl Anderson, Sonny Davis (who will sign in December as a juco transfer); two DEs -- Lyle Sendlein, Tully Janszen (the Horns' latest commit, he could also play at DT); three LBs -- Brian Robison, Marcus Myers and Garnet Smith; and one ATH -- Clint Haney. That leaves the Horns in position to take at least 13 more prospects (and quite possibly more) over the next five months from among Mesquite DT Marco Martin, Alief Hastings DT Rodrique Wright, Lancaster DT Larry Dibbles, The Woodlands DE Travis Leitko, Shreveport (LA) Evangel DE Chase Pittman, Jenks (OK) DE Bryan Pickryl, Scottsdale (AZ) DE Loren Howard, Houston Madison QB Vincent Young, Plano East OL Justin Blalock, Highlands Ranch (CO) OL/DL Kasey Studdard, Galena Park RB Albert Hardy, Winnfield (LA) RB Zan Johnson, Flower Mound Marcus WR Robert Timmons, Champaign (IL) WR Marquis Johnson, Longview LB Marvin Byrdsong, North Mesquite LB Aaron Harris, North Garland RB/ATH Edorian McCullough, Mart ATH Quincy Cosby and Hallsville S Kendrick Muckelroy.
