SCOUTS SIZE UP HASSAN RIDGEWAY

Most of the NFL scouts I spoke with about Texas DT Hassan Ridgeway said the Longhorn would likely be selected in the second or third round. His pre-draft evaluation from the NFL came back as a second-round grade.

As I reported in HD ONLY on Wednesday, NFL scouts are all over the place on Ridgeway, including the one that offered to bet me a case of the winner’s favorite liquor that Ridgeway wouldn’t be picked before the third round.

“He’s rock solid physically – looks great,” the scout said. “But the inconsistency of his play just makes me not trust what I’m getting. He’s on our board, but we won’t touch him before the third round.”

A scout who really likes Ridgeway said he believes the right team and coaching staff will be able to get a more consistent effort out of Ridgeway.

“Rightly or wrongly, I think some teams are going to think of the knocks on Ridgeway and think back to a guy named Shaun Rogers,” the scout said. “There are a lot of teams that kicked themselves for passing on Rogers, who had a rep as a guy who’d take plays off.

“You get these big defensive tackles with a lot of ability with the right team, the right coaches – and the plays being taken off start to disappear. I think that’s what we saw in 2014 when Ridgeway was next to a high-level player in Malcom Brown. Plus, I think Ridgeway was banged up to start this past (2015) season.”

Ridgeway suffered a lower back injury in a car accident that sidelined him for the first part of fall camp. It was a nagging injury that hindered his ability to get in the best shape to start the season and also limited his playing time/reps in games early in the season.

Ridgeway's stats at Texas:

Year ..... Total Tackles ......Solo Tackles ........Asst Tackles..... TFL ...... Sacks ........ QBH .....Fum Rec .....

2014 ..............43.....................27..........................16................11...........6-48..............2............0...............

2015 ..............36.....................24..........................12................6.5........ 3.5-16 ...........2..........2-26...........

All the scouts I spoke with said they didn’t think another Longhorn would be drafted.

They weren’t even absolutely sure about free-agent contracts but said Duke Thomas, Daje Johnson, Desmond "Tank" Jackson, Marcus Johnson, Alex De La Torre and Shiro Davis had a chance to get invited to fall camp as undrafted free agents.

Scouts said Tank Jackson might go to camp with somebody because of his 36 reps of 225 pounds on the bench at Texas' Pro Day. That would have been the most at this year's NFL Combine (Arizona State's Christian Westerman had the high at the combine with 34 reps). But Jackson's lis franc (foot) injury suffered in 2014 could raise enough concern that he doesn't get drafted, scouts said.

To a man the scouts said all of those players just mentioned didn’t have the production on the field to warrant an invite. Their invites, the scouts said, would be based more on their measurables and experience at a high-profile program that played against other high-level programs.
