A.J. Davis checks in from Lakeland (Fla) as the No 18 ranked running back in America. Also, a member of the Scout.com 300 (#196) Davis is one of the most heavily recruited players in the Southeast. With offers from Auburn, Oklahoma, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, LSU and Miami he has plenty of options ahead.
Two out of state schools, Auburn, and Oklahoma appear to have the inside track which shows he is willing to leave the state of Florida. Charlie Strong is no stranger to Lakeland High School as he played a prominent role and landing the “Lakeland 7” for the University of Florida which consisted of the Pouncey twins and Chris Rainey among others. Will the familiarity with the Lakeland coaching staff give Texas a chance?
Davis was anticipating on the Texas offer earlier this month.
“They’re a pretty great program,” A.J. Davis said. “I’m looking forward to getting offered.”
Davis will schedule a trip to Texas over the Summer and when he does he will get the full attention of the Longhorn coaching staff. He is the most complete back on the Texas board at this time. Texas needs to overtake a few teams, but if he visits they will be right there for his services.
Davis is all about intangibles. He brings a lot to the table as a running back, and he could play other positions. He can run the ball; he catches the ball out of the backfield, and he can line up in the slot. He is very quick and flashes great balance. Excellent in open space and knows how to set defenders up. Not a power back and more of a perimeter guy than between the tackles. Needs to add strength. A versatile player.
