A name recruiting fans might want to start paying attention to is Devodrick Johnson. The 6-foot-2, 210-pound safety is flying under the radar. The Scout.com three-star safety holds offers from Mississippi State Bulldogs, Missouri Tigers, Oklahoma State Cowboys, Texas A&M Aggies and Texas Tech Red Raiders to name a few. Johnson will camp with the Longhorns during Under the Lights on July 23rd.
“We'll I do plan on visiting Texas on the 23rd,” Devodrick Johnson said. “I'm looking forward to camping and getting to check the place out if that’s okay with Mr. Strong and his staff.”
Johnson has kept his eye on the Longhorns.
“When I hear about Texas, the first thing that comes to mind is a long shot,” Johnson said. “I watched Texas defeat the big 12 champions last year, and that game kept me at the end of my seat. I always heard great things about Mr. Strong. I love what he is doing with the program, and I feel like their heading somewhere.”
Johnson does not know much about linebacker Coach Brian Jean-Mary, but he’s glad he coaches at Texas.
“The LB coach, Coach BJ I don’t know much about him, but I do know he used to be at Louisville,” Johnson said. “Now he’s a Longhorn, so that’s something to be thankful about.”
Johnson excels at numerous positions on both sides of the ball, but at the next level I expect to see him grow into that outside linebacker position.
“When someone asks me to talk about how I play,” Johnson said. “First thing that comes to mind is a dog. I'm not afraid of stepping up to the plate. Bottom of the 9th bases loaded and two outs, and we're down 6-9. My playing style is a playmaker. I'm all over the field making plays on offense and defense. As far as what position I want to play in college is either Safety or LB but either way I'm going to make plays.”
