TEAM NUGGETS MIDWAY THROUGH FALL CAMP
One reason there may be some hubbub over a strong performance in fall camp thus far by Swoopes is the way he's handled the blitz in camp.
That's something the defense didn't really throw at Buechele as much in the spring or in the spring game. Swoopes, who's certainly seen his share of blitzes in games, has done a better job of handling the blitz packages the defense has thrown at the offense up to this point, I'm told.
And because Notre Dame Fighting Irish defensive coordinator Brian Van Gorder is known for his exotic blitzes, it's definitely been a gold star for Swoopes up to this point. But I'm also told Buechele is getting better at reacting to the blitz and is making the kind of progress you'd expect from a freshman - slowly but surely. And it's not like UT's defense doesn't have some talented blitzers.
So the handling of the blitz is something everyone is watching as we head into the final 10 days of camp before entering game week.
We've talked about the walking wounded: C Zach Shackelford (ankle) ... RT Tristan Nickelson (ankle) ... WR Armanti Foreman (right foot/ankle) ... WR Reggie Hemphill-Mapps ... and ... RB Kirk Johnson (ankle/knee)
The thinking is still that Shackelford and Nickelson will be back ...
