Future Texas OL Xavier Newman loves trip to Austin week one

The University of Texas will host UTEP in week two of the college football season after opening with Notre Dame last Sunday evening. Over 100,000 fans were on hand to watch the Longhorns upset the Irish including offensive line standout Xavier Newman.

The 6-foot-3, 275-pound Xavier Newman checks in from Desoto (Texas) De Soto High School.  The three-star offensive center loved what he saw from his future teammates on Sunday.

“My overall experience was great,” Xavier Newman said.  “I really enjoyed myself and I had a great time and the fan base is CRAZY and at the game it was LOUD!  I was feeling great and we were crunk.  I was with the team and I could feel the unity and I can’t wait to be there playing.  I was with Josh Thompson, Kobe Boyce and Damion Miller most of the time.  I got a chance to chill with Walker Little and my thoughts are people are sleeping on Texas.”

Scout.com Take

Xavier Newman is a quality Power Five-caliber offensive lineman with playing experience at left tackle in Texas high school football's largest classification. Newman is an established drive-blocker who thrives in the run game. He gets his hands inside his target and consistently steers opponents where he wants them to go. He also does a good job of staying on his blocks and finishing them through the whistle. Newman's frame more resembles that of a guard-to-guard player, though he does have adequate length and the requisite playing experience on the outside. He's getting offers as a combo OG/OT prospect. Newman possesses a good ceiling as a pass protector, though he sometimes looks like can't quite turn off his drive-blocking instincts. That said, his tenacity and aggression are a welcome site for any program looking for quality O-line prospect from one of Texas' most talent-laden programs. - Gabe Brooks
