Houston's Tom Herman Expected To Be Next Texas Longhorns Head Coach

University of Houston head coach Tom Herman is expected to become the next head coach at Texas, sources told HornsDigest.com.

Tom Herman, a former grad assistant at Texas who won the Frank Broyles Award after helping Ohio State to the national title with a third-string quarterback in 2014 before going 22-4 in two seasons as the head coach at Houston, has agreed to a 6-year deal with Texas, two sources close to the situation told HornsDigest.com.

One source said it was a six-year deal for "less than $6 million per year."

Another source close to the situation said the 6-year deal starts at $5.35 million in Year 1 and graduates to $5.85 million in Year 6.

University of Houston Board of Regents Chairman Tillman Fertitta confirmed Herman's departure via Twitter Saturday afternoon.

Here is the latest HornsDigest.com is hearing about the situation:

  • Hearing UH QB Kyle Allen could qualify as a grad transfer in December and would potentially join Herman at Texas with two years of eligibility.
  • I'm told by a source Florida State TE coach and recruiting coordinator Tim Brewster, who recruited Vince Young to Texas on Mack Brown's staff, is likely to join Herman in Austin. Brewster has been the lead guy recruiting 2017 studs Baron Browning and Jeffrey Okudah, among others.
  • I was told LSU's Ed Orgeron has expressed interest in Major Applewhite as assistant head coach and offensive coordinator.
  • Hearing the Dallas Cowboys are planning to offer Charlie Strong a defensive coaching job.
