Why Orlando?

Todd Orlando was named the interim head coach at Houston following Tom Herman’s move to Texas. While he will interview for the Cougars’ lead vacancy, Orlando could end up following Herman to Austin if not chosen as Houston’s next head coach.

Dave Aranda – LSU

Why Aranda?

Dave Aranda has a proven track record of fielding outstanding defensive units. After three-years at Wisconsin, Aranda’s defenses ranked among the top nationally and that trend continued during his first season coaching at LSU. A former roommate of head coach Tom Herman, Aranda has been mentioned many times as a contender for the Longhorns’ defensive coordinator vacancy.

However, multiple reports surfaced Monday that LSU agreed to a three-year contract extension for Aranda, which would take Texas out of the mix.

Brent Venables – Clemson

Why Venables?

Brent Venables is without a doubt one of the best defensive minds in college football. Clemson has finished each season since 2013 as a Top 25 ranked total defense under Venables watch. While he would come with a hefty price tag, Texas should absolutely test the waters with Venables to see where his interest - if any - lies.

Geoff Collins – Florida

Why Collins?

Geoff Collins has slowly emerged as one of the highest paid defensive coordinators in college football, and he has earned that money. Not only has he consistently fielded solid defenses, Collins is also a fantastic recruiter.

Regardless of if the Longhorns have a legitimate chance to even catch his attention, there's no doubt Texas needs to at least try before moving in a different direction.

Luke Fickell – Ohio State

Why Fickell?

Luke Fickell coached on staff with Herman during his stint at Ohio State. Fickell was retained as defensive coordinator under Buckeyes’ head coach Urban Meyer and has proven time and again he knows what it takes to play salty defense. While Fickell will likely land a head coaching job sometime in the future, it's worth the risk to see if he would give the Longhorns' a look.
