One-by-one, Tom Herman is rounding out his coaching staff. According to a source close to the situation, Herman has added his former receivers coach and recruiting coordinator at Houston - Drew Mehringer - to the Texas staff.
Mehringer, who is expected to be named the receivers coach (and possibly passing game coordinator) at Texas, spent the 2015 season at Houston with Herman before taking the offensive coordinator position under first-year head coach Chris Ash at Rutgers this past season.
That leaves two spots for Herman to fill on his staff:
- offensive coordinator
- an offensive position coach
I don't know what anyone else has heard, but I'll tell you what I've heard :
Major Applewhite was going to be the offensive coordinator at Texas if he didn't get the Houston job.
Multiple rock-solid sources have confirmed this to me. (The fact big-money sources - not UT officials - were in the process of a third-party settlement of the Bev Kearney lawsuit to clear the path for Applewhite - and then just stopped those settlement talks on Friday, when Applewhite was announced as the UH coach, should tell you something!)
So now Tom Herman is in search of a new offensive coordinator and one last position coach.
These situations can be fluid and can change completely, of course, but the three names I'm hearing the most right now for the two remaining spots are:
Ohio State offensive coordinator Tim Beck
Chicago Bears' RB coach Stan Drayton
Florida State TE coach/recruiting coordinator Tim Brewster
Based on these variables, your scenarios would be ...
A) Tim Beck as OC/QB and Stan Drayton as co-OC or Asst HC/RB coach ...
B) Stan Drayton as OC and Tim Brewster as Asst HC or Co-OC .... or ...
C) Tim Beck as OC and Tim Brewster as Asst HC or Co-OC
Like I said, these situations are fluid and another name or two could enter the equation. But right now, those are the three names I'm hearing most for the two remaining spots.
We'll know soon enough.
Here's a look at Herman's staff so far:
Offensive line - Derek Warehime (already officially hired at Texas)
Running backs -
Receivers - HD sources say Drew Mehringer will reclaim the position he coached for Herman at UH in 2015
TE - Corby Meekins (already hired at Texas, Meekins coached TEs and FBs at UH last year under Herman. Sources tell HD Meekins could coach another position at Texas, possibly RBs depending on Herman's remaining two hires.)
Coordinator/Linebackers - HD sources indicate Todd Orlando, Herman's DC at Houston, will take the same position at Texas
Co-DC/Safeties - HD sources say Craig Naivar, who had the same position with Herman at UH, will join the Texas staff
Defensive line - Oscar Giles (already officially hired at Texas)
Cornerbacks/Special teams - Jason Washington (already officially hired at Texas)
More on Mehringer:
Mehringer's ties to Herman began was a QB at Rice in 2007 when Herman was the Owls' offensive coordinator under David Bailiff. Mehringer has worked for seven seasons with Herman’s offense at Houston, Ohio State, Iowa State and Rice.
During his time as a graduate assistant working with the offense at Ohio State in 2012-13, Herman was the OC and Stan Drayton was the RB coach.
Mehringer's lone season at Houston with Herman saw the Cougars win the American Athletic Conference and finish with a 13-1 record, including a victory over Florida State in the Peach Bowl.
Prior to arriving in Houston, Mehringer spent the 2014 season at James Madison under coach Everett Withers as the co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.
While at James Madison, the Dukes advanced to the FCS Playoffs for just the second time in the previous six years.
Mehringer also spent two seasons as a graduate assistant at Iowa State working with receivers while Herman was OC under Paul Rhoads.
A Mansfield (Texas) product, Mehringer attended Rice as a quarterback before suffering a career-ending injury. He then served as a student assistant from 2007-09 at Rice with the quarterbacks while Herman was the OC under Bailiff, graduating in 2010 with a degree in political science.
Mehringer earned a master's degree in sports management at Ohio State in 2013.
