CHIP DIPS: UT WOMEN NEED TEXAS FANS - NOW!

HD's CHIP BROWN, who has covered Texas for 25 years, says in his latest CHIP DIPS that Longhorns' fans starving for a championship-caliber team to cheer for, have no excuse but to be at the Erwin Center Monday night when No. 4 Baylor and No. 8 Texas essentially battle for the Big 12 regular-season title and possibly a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Women's Tournament.

CHIP DIP #1 ... Texas fans hungry to go cheer for a UT team contending for a title - tonight's women's basketball game at home vs Baylor at 8 pm CT is your chance.

And UT is offering $5 tickets with the promo code BIGMONDAY ... http://texassports.com/news/2017/2/7/tickets-big-monday-promotion-availa...

Even though the Texas women lost a heart-breaker at OU - 74-73 on Saturday - Karen Aston's team comes into Monday night's game at 14-1 in league play, same as Baylor (14-1). But BU's loss was to Texas in Waco two weeks ago.

So a win tonight for Aston's team would all but clinch the Big 12 regular-season title with two league games left to play as well as likely clinching a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

Huge stakes for the Texas women tonight.

If you haven't seen Texas do-it-all G and leading scorer Brooke McCarty live, do yourself the favor. She is a mere 5-foot-4, but she's lightning quick and led the transition attack that helped Texas beat Baylor down the floor in their first meeting.

The Longhorns outscored BU 10-0 in fast-break points in UT's 85-79 win in Waco two weeks ago. That will be a big key in tonight's game - can Texas once again beat BU down the floor?

CHIP DIP #2 ... The Texas men are seeking their first win away from Austin (0-12) at West Virginia tonight - at the exact same time (8 pm CT, ESPN) as the UT women (8 pm, ESPN2).

First of all, how does that happen?

That's the second time in three days that's happened. Both the UT men and women played at 1 pm CT on Saturday.

CHIP DIP #3 ... As far as Shaka Smart's team, I've pretty much said all I can say and am now focusing my energy on Karen Aston's team.

I've expressed my disappointment in the lack of development at the point guard position and how Kerwin Roach should've been coached into being the best perimeter defender in the Big 12 with his lateral quickness and explosion.

I've groaned about the team's lack of offensive identity and lack of post touches - not just to freshman Jarrett Allen but to senior big man Shaq Cleare - the team's No. 3 scoring option behind Allen and freshman G Andrew Jones - as well.

But, hey, the Texas men have won six of their last eight vs WVU - so they have that going for them (even though the Longhorns are 0-12 away from Austin this season).

CHIP DIP #4 ... OK, one more thing about the Texas men's hoops team.

The Horns are 10-17 and 4-10 in Big 12 play and are coming off back-to-back losses against teams UT absolutely should've beaten if Texas was going to show any signs of improvement down the stretch (at last-place OU and home vs a K-State team that had lost 6 of 7 and three straight).

Texas Tech is 17-10 and 5-9 in Big 12 play and seems to be getting better. First-year coach Chris Beard's team has home wins over WVU and Baylor and lost by one at home to KU. Tech should've won at WVU Saturday in OT but lost in double OT.

I guess that's what I wanted to see from the Texas men down the stretch - improvement. And I haven't seen it.

CHIP DIP #5 ... Sure looks like three-time All-Star Boogie Cousins is trading one unhappy residence (Sacramento) for another one (New Orleans). Or maybe that's the case no matter where Cousins ends up ...

Forget that the New Orleans' Pelicans could be charged with robbing Sacramento for getting one of the league's best power forwards for some slow-starting potential (Buddy Hield), a regular on injured reserve (Tyreke Evans) and someone named Langston Galloway and a couple protected draft picks.

Is Cousins really going to give up the chance to negotiate for a max, $209 million contract with Sacramento by allowing himself to be traded from one Bermuda Triangle (Sacramento) to another (New Orleans)?

Does New Orleans have anything outside of Anthony Davis to make Cousins, you or anyone else believe Cousins is better off with the Pelicans than with the Kings? Is re-signing Pelicans' point guard Jrue Holiday really the answer to this remodeled Pelicans' team taking off? Is the trio of Cousins, Davis and Holiday the next "big three" in the NBA?

Or will Cousins be kicking over furniture in New Orleans in no-time out of frustration, and he'll be in the free-agent market this summer anyway because he and Davis can't co-exist down low and shooters such as E'Twaun Moore aren't exactly lighting it up?

Would love to see it work for good-guy Pelicans' coach Alvin Gentry and New Orleans, a maligned franchise once owned by the league (when Chris Paul went screaming to LA). I just can't see it yet.

CHIP DIP #6 ... At long last, Dustin Johnson owns golf.

Don't you get the sense that when Dustin Johnson broke through and won the 2016 U.S. Open after all of his near-misses (including the missed 8-foot putt on 18 at the 2015 U.S. Open that allowed Jordan Spieth to win it) that Johnson became a monster.

It reminds of Phil Mickelson going 0-for-48 or whatever he went in majors to start off his career before finally winning one in his 13th year as a pro golfer. Now, Mickelson has five majors.

Johnson bombs it off the tee with ridiculous control and putts well enough to win major after major. All he needed to do was get out of his own way, including going to rehab for substance abuse. Now, he's doing that.

D.J. destroyed the field at the Genesis Open this past weekend and moved to No. 1 in the world and is now expecting his second child with wife Paulina Gretzky. Have we mentioned the father-in-law of D.J., the No. 1 golfer in the world, is arguably the best hockey player ever - Wayne Gretzky? How cool is that?

Plus, it means I get to see wait to see D.J. AND Wayne Gretzky - most likely - at the Dell World Match Play event next month at Austin Country Club.
