SOURCE: TEXAS MAKES CONTACT WITH GRAD TRANSFER CANDIDATE ND QB MALIK ZAIRE

According to a source close to the situation, Texas has reached out to Notre Dame QB Malik Zaire, who plans to be a graduate transfer.

According to the source, Zaire and his family were surprised to receive interest from Texas because of the play of Shane Buechele in UT's victory over Notre Dame last season.

According to the source, the leaders for Zaire are Wisconsin and Florida.

The source said Zaire is not interested in getting into a QB battle he could lose - after having that happen last season in South Bend with DeShone Kizer.

Zaire has indicated he plans to make a decision in April.

Texas coach Tom Herman said last week the Longhorns were in the market for a graduate transfer QB to add depth to their two current scholarship QBs - sophomore Shane Buechele and early enrollee freshman Sam Ehlinger. Herman confirmed Texas was recruiting LSU grad transfer QB Brandon Harris, who announced Sunday he was headed to North Carolina.

In three seasons at Notre Dame, Zaire completed 58 of 98 passes (59.2 percent) for 816 yards with six touchdowns and zero interceptions while rushing 72 times for 324 yards (4.5 ypc) and two TDs.

Against Texas in 2015 - a 38-3 victory by the Irish - Zaire was 19 of 22 passing for 313 yards (86.4 percent) with three TDs and zero INTs while running nine times for 16 yards (1.8 ypc). Zaire suffered a season-ending injury two games into the 2015 season.

In 2016, Zaire was beaten out for the starting QB job by DeShone Kizer after both played against Texas in the season opener.

Against UT in 2016, a 50-47 double overtime victory by the Longhorns, Zaire was 2 of 5 passing for 23 yards and ran three times for zero yards.

As a true freshman QB against the Irish, Shane Buechele was 16 of 26 passing for 280 yards (61.5 percent) with two TDs and one INT while running five times for 33 yards (6.6 ypc) and one TD.
