BREAKING: Texas Longhorns Land Commitment from 4-Star QB Casey Thompson

Tom Herman finds his quarterback, picking up 4-star dual-threat QB Casey Thompson out of Oklahoma Sooner country.

Tom Herman has found his quarterback.

Four-star QB Casey Thompson has verbally committed to Texas; making his announcement during a ceremony in his Southmoore (Okla.) High School gym Thursday afternoon.

The son of former Oklahoma QB Charles Thompson and the younger brother of former OU and Utah QB Kendal Thompson, Casey chose a different path than the Sooners in his family.

The dual-threat quarterback's decision to play for the Longhorns on the other side of the Red River Rivalry could be best summed up in two words.

"Tom Herman. Those are two words I would use to describe Texas," Thompson said of why the Longhorns secured his pledge.

"For me, I made the decision based on things other than football. Just the alumni, the fan base, and there's big time football down there, so that's what really did it for me."

Thompson has been high on Texas for months, with his interest in the Longhorns increasing after taking his first unofficial visit in late February for Junior Day weekend.

During that weekend, Thompson not only had the chance to meet Herman, he also seemed to bond with Texas sophomore QB Shane Buechele, who, like Thompson, has a bunch of OU family ties. Three of Buechele's four siblings went to Oklahoma.

And like Buechele, Thompson doesn't seem afraid to step out on his own, even if it means playing on the opposite side of the Red River Rivalry.

"The Red River Rivalry will be a crazy game and crazy atmosphere," Thompson said. "I've been to that game almost every year. It's always been a dream for me to play in that. Just knowing I am going to be able to play in (Red River Rivalry), it gives me goosebumps just thinking about it."

For Charles Thompson, one of the biggest draws to Texas was having his son play for an offensive-minded head coach. Though the former Sooner QB said his dislike for the Longhorns dates back to when he was "five or six years old", he felt coach Herman and Texas offered the best fit for Casey.

"We had to take off all of the colors, whether it was Oklahoma, Texas, Miami or North Carolina, and look at what was the best fit," Charles Thompson said of his son's decision.

"Looking at everything--the quarterback room only having two scholarship quarterbacks there, being that Herman likes the style of QB Casey is, and has shown a history of playing that type of quarterback (in JT Barrett and Greg Ward)--the situation just felt right."

Make no mistake about it, his son's commitment does not mean Charles will be trading in his crimson for burnt orange.

"I will certainly always bleed crimson," the elder Thompson said. "It's funny, I was in Herman's office, and we took a picture. He tried to get me to throw up the Hook 'Em, but I'm just not quite there yet. It's going to take years and years for me to do that.

"At the end of the day, family is family. This is my son, and I'm going to support him 100 percent. I'm going to root for him to have as much success as he can, wherever he is playing."

Casey Thompson's pledge marks Herman's first QB commitment since being hired at Texas.

Thompson has a video gamesque highlight tape that is filled with big play after big play. That is why he was able to capture Sophomore of the Year honors in the Midlands region following a dominating 2015 year. He can beat you with his arm or his legs and is a dual-threat. He is a winner who plays with confidence on the field. We really like how he seems to have a natural feel for the pocket and will work within it to make a play down the field, even though he has the skills to get outside of it and make plays. He throws well on the run and when being pressured but is always a threat to tuck the ball and pick up yardage when he needs to. He is an accurate and consistent passer who can drop the deep ball right over the shoulder and into his receiver’s hands. - National Recruiting Analyst Greg Powers
