4-Star S Caden Sterns' Commitment Adds To First-Year Texas Longhorns Head Coach Tom Herman's Recent Recruiting Momentum

Four-star safety Caden Sterns' commitment to Texas adds major boost to Tom Herman's recent recruiting momentum.

First-year head coach Tom Herman has been crushing it on the recruiting trail in 2018. The Longhorns' staff has worked diligently to stay in the mix with some of the top prospects in the country since arriving in Austin, and have made some moves with several recruits.

The hard work has paid off recently, as Texas picked up seven verbal pledges between April 7 and May 7 -- including five four-star prospects and two three-stars.

While momentum has been rolling in the Longhorns' direction for more than 30-days, the magnitude of Herman's most recent commitment is not to be ignored.

Texas made major recruiting waves last weekend, when four-star safety and former LSU commit Caden Sterns took a surprise unofficial visit to Texas. But the trip was only the beginning.

24-hours after his visit, Sterns flipped his pledge from the Tigers to the Longhorns -- marking Herman's highest rated prospect landed to date.

Obviously, Sterns' flip was huge for the Longhorns' 2018 recruiting class. But this surprising turn of events holds greater significance than simply picking up another commitment.

First of all, Texas has been interested in Sterns for a while -- longer than what has been made public -- but it was thought the interest may have been one-sided. Sterns' trip to Austin last weekend was a big step in the Longhorns' favor, though Sterns did not want to make news of his visit public. That didn't play out the way he wanted, as a photo of Sterns on campus sparked social media uproar Saturday afternoon.

But the fact Herman and his staff were able to not only convince a prospect, who was looked upon as a solid verbal LSU commitment, to take an impromptu visit to Texas, but flip his pledge to the Longhorns before this staff even coaches a game in Austin shows the way things are trending on the 40-acres.

Oh, and Sterns being one of the top prospects nationally in the 2018 recruiting class, AND someone Texas had on its wish-list is just a cherry on top of the Longhorns' sundae.

The details are not being overlooked by other top prospects. Recruits are taking notice of what is going on at Texas, which is big for the Longhorns' new staff.

And as it currently stands, I do not expect the recruiting momentum to slow down anytime soon for Texas ... It's just beginning.
