Current Commit Update: Derek Lokey

We spoke to Denton Ryan DT Derek Lokey to get his thoughts on the resignation of Carl Reese and on the Horns' season.

Lokey, who gave his verbal in early March 2003, said the defensive coordinator change hasn't had an effect on his thinking. "There is no change (in my situation). I've been talking to the UT coaches continuously, and kept well informed." When asked if any other schools had recently tried to contact him, the two-sport star replied, "No, I have not heard from anyone."

Due to Denton Ryan's run to the Texas 4A Division II finals, Lokey was unable to take his scheduled official visit to Austin for Banquet Weekend. However, he will be in Austin this weekend (1/16) for the tour.

Thoughts on Texas' season:

"I was able to see 3 or 4 games (unofficially) and was very impressed with the Kansas State game. How they fought back at the end and won the game. The Holiday Bowl was disappointing. I thought we got outplayed. It happens."

High School Achievements:

Lokey's Denton Ryan team also finished the season on a disappointing note, failing to win their second consecutive 4A final. Ryan lost the title game to La Marque and future teammate Rashad Bobino in triple OT.

The Ryan star has been receiving many individual awards, including being named Dave Campbell's Texas 4A Player of the Year.

Although his high school football career is over, he still has an excellent chance to add more trophies to his collection during the track season. Last year Lokey, after throwing the discus a Texas state high of 183-2 during the season, he finished only third in the State meet. Look for him to add a blue ribbon this year.
