Recruiting: Franklin Okam Picks Texas

Richardson Lake Highlands DT/OT Franklin Okam holds down the No. 5 spot in the final Texas Hot 100 rankings. A 6-4, 300-pounder with uncanny athleticism is certainly in high order and schools from all over the nation chasing his verbal proved that to be true. Yet only one lucky school could secure the services of this particular man-child and he made that announcement for everyone to see on Fox Sports Southwest. For those who missed it, the 5-star talent selected The University of Texas.

Asked if he had finally reached the final verdict by the host of Southwest Sports Report and who the lucky team was, Franklin Okam, after pulling a Burnt Orange ball cap from a bag, said "I'm going to play ball for the University of Texas."

The interior defensive lineman cited the blend of athletics, academics and the social opportunities as a few of the reasons Texas came out on top.

"Hopefully, I'll get the opportunity to play as a true freshman," he said.

Asked by the host if the Longhorn coaches indicated when he might see the field, the Lone Star State's No. 5 said, "They said if I come in and work hard, come in there ready, I could play early."

The recruiting process can be rather burdensome as Okam took four official visits in three weeks, still managing to play basketball, conduct interviews, and go to school.

"I'm finally glad it's over," he said.

Okam also said he thought it was going to be "Texas all the way," before adding that it wasn't until his final official visit to Stanford (1/30) that he fully knew Austin was where he wanted to make his home for the next four years.
