Jody Conradt's Horns picked up a No. 1 seed for the first time in over a decade Sunday afternoon when the NCAA Women's Tournament field was announced. Texas (28-4) is the top seed in the West Regional and will open play Sunday in Austin vs. No. 16 seed Southern (17-12), the surprise champs of the Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament.
UT leads a parade of highly seeded Big 12 teams in the tournament. Oklahoma, which beat the Horns handily in the league tournament championship game Saturday night, grabbed a No. 3 seed in the Midwest, one spot better than No. 4 Baylor in the same bracket. Missouri also landed in the Midwest as a No. 11 seed. Kansas State, which shared the league's regular season title with Texas, is a No. 2 seed in the Mideast. Texas Tech is No. 4 in that regional. Colorado, with a No. 6 seed in the East, makes seven Big 12 teams in the Dance.
The No. 1s aside from UT are Duke in the Mideast, Tennessee in the Midwest and Penn State in the East.
A win in the opener vs. the Jaguars will pit the Horns vs. the winner of the No. 8 Michigan State vs. No. 9 Arizona game, also on Sunday in Austin.
