Recruiting: Horns Make Offer; Close To 10th Commit

Only two tailbacks could be found on the Texas Longhorn depth chart after Selvin Young broke his fibula in the Arkansas game and with Erik Hardeman sidelined due to his unresolved academic status. Looking ahead to next year, a team minus one Cedric Benson, the question some Orangebloods are askin' is: "Where's the depth?" Say hello to a new Longhorn running back target Jerrell Wilkerson who, after tripping to the UT-Rice game this past weekend in Austin, said "(Texas) offered."

"They (UT coaches) have been showing a lot of interest lately but I didn't know that I was ever going to be offered by them. But they came to my game Friday night and then I went up there Saturday (for the Texas-Rice game). And, they kind of closed it out. They offered," said Jerrell Wilkerson, indicating that he was in fact a 'take' at the tailback position on UT's board.

In some circles, Wilkerson was rumored to be a Longhorn commit after tripping to the Capital City this past weekend. Did that happen? He weighs in...

"No, I didn't commit," said Wilkerson, No. 58 on our most recent Texas Hot 100 rankings. "I need to talk to my mom about it. It's something we still need to do (discuss the pros and cons of all schools in serious pursuit). I want to make sure I do the right thing."

Other teams high on Wilkerson's list? Tennessee (offer) and Notre Dame (offer).

"Yes, Tennessee and Notre Dame are both high on my list. And I'm not sure I could just commit (to Texas) without hearing what they might have to say or talking to them again."

One angle the San Antonio baller said UT possesses a clear advantage in with regard to selling the Longhorn program to him and his mother, who plays a decided role in the 3-star runner's recruitment, is proximity.

"Playing at Texas would be a great opportunity, just because of how close we are," Wilkerson said. "My mom could get in a car and drive up to see me play. And, that's something we have to look at."

Could a commitment come soon?

"Yes, it could. We just haven't really talked about it that much and we need some time to talk about it."

Don't be surprised to see something go down soon. Of course, in recruiting, you never know. But the impression I get is that an announcement on Wilkerson's college future could come as early as today, and if not today, sometime this week. And that decision appears to be a Burnt Orange outcome. Stay tuned...
