Halpin said Martin's speed, particularly given his 315-pound body, had college coaches from across the country clamoring for his signature. Texas, though, won out over Florida State, where he was scheduled to visit the weekend of Jan. 11, and Tennessee and A&M, two schools he tripped to during the fall. Martin has yet to officially visit the Texas campus, but he plans to do so on Jan. 25.
At last summer's Nike camp, Martin ran a 4.84 forty while weighing in at 312 pounds. The Mesquite coach said Martin continues to be clocked in the 4.8s. Halpin also said Martin recently benched 370 pounds, and squats 640 and power cleans 390.
As you would expect, Halpin credits Martin with being instrumental in Mesquite's state championship run but he said the 6-3, 315-pounder is no prima donna. "He's not very vocal," the coach told IT Wednesday. "He's very low key. He doesn't draw attention to himself. He's just a team player. He does a good job and cares for his teammates."
"He's a good person," Halpin added. "He has a lot of character and his talent speaks for itself."
The Texas staff is assembling a D-line class thats talent speaks for itself, and from top to bottom may be one of the best groups ever at UT (similar to the quality of the WR class of '00 and the OL class of '01). And the depth and talent of this DL class is much needed based on the Horns' lack of numbers at both DE and DT.
Martin joins already committed DTs Wright and Sonny Davis (who originally signed with the Horns in '00 but did not qualify academically at the time and who still may not make it to the Forty Acres) and committed DEs Lyle Sendlein, Tully Janszen, Chase Pittman and Brian Pickryl. Sendlein Janszen and Pittman are possibilities both inside and outside.
The Horns are also still in the hunt for DEs Travis Leitko and Larry Dibbles. Leitko has January visits planned to Stanford and Michigan and he's already tripped to A&M and Notre Dame. Dibbles is scheduled to visit South Bend the weekend of Jan. 18, but the battle for his services probably will come down to UT and OU, where he visited on consecutive weekends earlier this month.
