Two More Visits for Midland Lee's Winston

The talented tight end spent much of his holiday visiting family in Massachusetts, and as usual, had some interesting things to say.

"We went up to visit my grandfather," Winston told HR on Wednesday night. "He's 86 years old and has colon cancer, but he's doing pretty well and is in good spirits."

Eric has asked about the weather while up North.

"It wasn't bad actually," he said. "It was mainly in the 40's. They live in the western part of the state, about an hour and a half away from Boston.

And what is on Winston's itinerary for January?

"I'm visiting Texas this weekend and LSU on the 18th," he continued. "And that will do it for me. No more trips."

And will his girlfriend accompany him to Texas as reported?

"She will not," Winston replied. "I'm going down there with my dad."

Eric was asked if everyone remains in the running and would it make a difference in his decision if Miami tight end Jeremy Shockey opts early for the NFL."

"I'll believe Jeremy's leaving when it becomes official, and he may go, I don't know," Eric said. "It won't make any difference in my decision. I really liked being around the guy on my visit and it would be great if he did stayed. No one (school) has been eliminated yet."

Winston had just returned from basketball practice when HR called. He was asked how that was going.

"Great," he said. We're 17-5 overall and 4-0 in district. I'm playing at center and power forward. (Laughing) I was averaging around 18 points per game last season, but am more of a role player this year. We have a junior that can really stroke it from the outside. He's averaging around 33 points per game."
