Texas Pulls In Commitment No. 11

South Garland wideout Phillip Payne, who measured at (or about) 6-2, 185 when we saw him at the State 7-on-7 Tourney last year, decided late Wednesday afternoon to make his college choice. Holding offers from a few schools in the Big 12 as well as an offer from the ACC, Payne chose the Big 12…

Phillip Payne, a sure-handed receiver for head coach Mickey Moss, is a prospect we've followed since he was a sophomore. He has a very nice size/speed package and brings tremendous effort to both the practice fields and gridiron. Possessing offers from Georgia Tech, Kansas, Oklahoma State and Texas, Payne picked the in-state Longhorns.

"I went to the UT Junior Day (about a month ago)," said Payne, taking us back to the events that led up to his commitment today. "And it was real nice -- really nice. When I stepped on the UT campus, I was in awe."

A week later, the South Garland receiver landed an offer to sport the Burnt Orange.

"After thinking about the recruiting process for a few weeks and trying to make a decision, I talked to my mom last night and she said to just pray about it," Payne continued. "I pretty much knew where I wanted to go already. But I prayed about it and woke up this morning knowing where I wanted to go."

Today, around 4:00 in the afternoon, the DFW-area athlete spoke to both UT WR coach Bobby Kennedy and the head man Mack Brown.

"Well, they were expecting me to come down this weekend, and we were not going to be able to make it, so I told them that," Payne added. "But that I wanted to go ahead and commit anyway."

Per Payne, Coach Kennedy told him that he had made his day and was really excited. "And, Coach Brown said he was excited about me committing and that getting it out of the way would make it less stressful on me, especially since I already know where I want to go. So, now, I can stay focused (on the books and team)."

JR Season Stats: 17 receptions, 306 yards (averaged 18 yards a grab) and 3 TDs. Payne also added 367 yards rushing with 9 TDs.

Weight Room-Numbers: Bench 300, Squat 500, Power Clean 245.

Academics: 2.4 GPA; SAT slated for May 7.
