Notes: RB Victor Ike, SS Phillip Geiggar and S Dakarai Pearson will miss spring drills to take care of "academic-related issues," according to UT. All three are expected back in the fall. If he returns, Ike will compete with Ivan Williams and others for the back-up tailback spot behind Benson. Geiggar and Pearson, upon their return, should be part of the rotation at safety. . . . With Geiggar and Pearson out this spring, though, look for DB coach Duane Akina to double train the young cornerbacks at both corner and safety. . . . Before the loss of Geiggar and Pearson, D-coordinator Carl Reese said he preferred to keep Vasher at safety this spring, although he is capable of playing either corner or safety. . . . Aside from Lee Jackson at strong and Derrick Johnson at the WILL 'backer spot, the spring positional situation at LB is somewhat uncertain and could look different than what is listed above. Boyd is probably the biggest wildcard because he is capable of playing (and has played during his Texas career) all three LB spots. . . . Spring will be Benson's first opportunity for full-contact work since before the Big 12 Championship Game. In San Diego, the sophomore-to-be had trouble gripping the ball tightly but reports from UT indicate that he will be 100-percent in spring. . . . After leaving the team last fall for personal reasons, Artie Ellis is back on the team and will compete for back-up snaps at TE. . . . Sendlein and Jakes are listed on the spring roster as DE/DTs but with Thornton and Pickryl both scheduled to miss spring while recovering from surgery, the 260-plus-pounders (as listed by UT) could see most of their action on the outside.
