The big DE is being recruited by one of the newest members of the UT Coaching Staff, Running Backs Coach Ken Rucker. "Coach Rucker is a great guy," Williams said. "I really like him beyond just a coach. He has great moral values."
Williams has also spoken to UT Head Coach Mack Brown. "Coach Brown is just like Coach Rucker," he said. "He is a man of high stature and is an all-around great person."
The Longview standout has made many unofficial visits so far. "I have been on unofficial visits to Texas, North Texas, Texas A&M, Baylor, SMU, LSU, and TCU," Williams said. His Texas visit came at one of UT's Junior Day's in early March. "The trip to Texas was great. I had a chance to tour the facilities and talk to Coach Rucker, Coach Chizik, and Coach Brown on not just a football level, but a personal level as well. They were straightforward with me about the chances of me receiving an offer and they told me exactly where I'd fit into the program. I really admired that."
Texas A&M is also giving Williams a lot of attention as they have already offered. Williams is being recruited by OL Coach Jim Bob Helduser. "Coach Helduser is a great guy and really laid out the plans as to how I'll fit into the defensive scheme," Williams said. "He told me that Texas A&M just doesn't want me, they need me on their team. That really stood out to me."
Williams has built a relationship with Texas A&M Head Coach Dennis Franchione as well. "Coach Franchione is a wonderful guy," he said. "Me and him talk a lot. We text message each other back and forth a good bit."
The big-time DE will be camping at two schools for sure this summer. "I'll be camping at Texas A&M and Texas for sure. I'm not sure about the rest."
What factors will play into his decision? "I want to go to a school with great academics, a good football program, and a school in a good environment. I also want to go to a school where I feel a bond with the coaching staff. That is important to me."
As a junior last season, Williams had 40 tackles, 2 sacks, 3 pass deflections, and more QB hurries than you can count on a Longview team that finished 12-1 in the extremely rugged Texas 5A Division and lost in the fourth round of the state playoffs. He also accomplished this while playing in a rotation with two other senior DEs. Williams is a candidate for the U.S. Army All-American Game. Scout.com is the official selection partner for the annual contest in San Antonio.
Williams is qualified as he carries a 3.5 GPA and a 990 SAT score. He will also receive his ACT scores soon.
