Recruiting: De'Shon Matthews Talks UT, Favorites

In the past, the Longhorns have been known to go West to California to find talent and this year may be no different. Elk Grove, Calif. DT De'Shon Matthews took some time to speak to Inside Texas about his favorites and UT's level of interest.

Elk Grove, Calif. DT De'Shon Matthews currently claims three offers. "I have been offered by Nebraska, Arizona, and Washington State," he said. "I currently do not know where I'll take my official visits, but right now, Cal is more to the top of my list even though they haven't offered me."

The Laguna Creek standout, who helped lead his high school team to a state playoff birth last fall, is being recruited by one of the new members of the UT Coaching Staff, Oscar Giles. "I haven't spoke to Coach Giles much, but he seems to be a real cool guy and showed a lot of interest in me," Matthews told IT. "He said I have a chance of being offered." Matthews hasn't had a chance to talk to Texas Head Coach Mack Brown yet.

So far, Matthews has made two unofficial visits. "I went to a Junior Day at both USC and Cal," he said. "Both trips were great. At USC, we went and watched practice, ate lunch, had a chance to tour the facilities, met our recruiting coordinator and had a chance to talk to Coach Carroll."

What factors will play into the decision of Matthews? "I want to go to a school with good academic programs, good athletic programs, a school in a good location and good weather."

"I would like to stay closer to home, that is why I give Cal the slight edge at this point," he added.
