Recruiting: Killeen QB Looking For Offers

Killeen Shoemaker ATH Keith Smith is a dual-threat QB who can beat you with his arm or his legs. He spoke to Inside Texas about his recruitment thus far and the interest he has received from Texas.

"I see myself as a dual-type player," Keith Smith said. "If a receiver is open I can get him the ball and if a play breaks down I can gain the yards we need on the ground." Smith currently has no offers, but is receiving attention from some big-time programs.

"Oklahoma State, Texas, Florida, Miami, and Baylor are showing me a lot of interest right now," he said. "Right now, I'd have to say that Oklahoma State is showing me the most interest."

Smith (6-3, 212, 4.54) is currently being recruited by OSU Tight Ends Coach Doug Meacham. "I talk to Coach Meacham a good bit," he said. "We talk a couple times a week and we text message each other back and forth."

The dual-threat prospect has also had contact with the Texas Coaching Staff. "I talk to Coach (Greg) Davis a good bit," he said. "He called me and told me he likes what he sees from me and wants me to keep working hard. He also invited me to the (June 5) Texas Camp, but I was unable to attend since I'm currently on vacation in the Virgin Islands." (Smith returned from the Virgin Islands on June 11th.)

Also of note for Orangebloods is that new Defensive Coordinator/Linebackers Coach Gene Chizik has made the trip to personally see the Shoemaker signal caller in action. "Coach Chizik stopped by one of our spring practices back in May. I couldn't talk to him long because it was in the middle of practice, but he said he was impressed with me and to keep playing hard."

Texas is eyeing Smith as a QB.

A few specific qualities in a school are important to Smith. "The school I choose must have a good education system," he said. "Education is very important to me. I also want a school that is preferably in the South and one that has a good football program." One can see that grades are very important to Smith. He currently carries a 3.96 GPA, a 1060 SAT Score, and wants to major in BioChemistry.

Smith knows one camp he will be attending. "I'll be camping at Baylor for sure," he said. Also of note is that Smith was in attendance at the Combine held in Waco, where he earned All-Combine honors as an ATH. "The combine went great," he said. "It was very well organized and a lot of the top players were there."

Last season, Smith passed for 1,498 yards and 8 TDs. On the ground he had 897 yards rushing and 14 TDs. He and his teammates (including incoming Longhorn DT Roy Miller) finished 6-4 in the Texas Class 5A Division and missed the State Playoffs by one game.
