Justin Mason: 'He's a complete player'

Amarillo Palo Duro SG Justin Mason recently committed to Texas Basketball Program. He spoke to Inside Texas about why he chose the Longhorns as his college destination.

"I had a great time on my visit," Justin Mason told IT. "Coach Barnes seems like a real good coach."

Justin has developed a personal relationship with Texas Head Coach Rick Barnes. "Coach Barnes is a guy I can go to and talk with about my personal life, he's just a great guy."

UT Strength & Conditioning Coach Todd Wright also played a role in Mason's decision. "I met Coach Wright on my visit," Justin said. "He showed me pictures of guys before and after they went into the weightroom. There was a huge difference and that's appealing to me. I need to get stronger."

What was Mason looking for in a school? "I wanted a school that gave me an opportunity to play," he said. "I wanted to go to a big-time program and have a chance to compete in the NCAA Tournament every year."

The UT Coaching Staff was impressed with Mason's attacking style. "They said they like the way I get to the basket," said Mason. "They like my defense as well."

"He's a great offensive player," added Palo Duro Head Coach Jeff Evans. "He's great at attacking the basket and has no weaknesses, he's a complete player."

Mason had offers from Texas, Texas Tech, Texas A&M, New Mexico, Colorado State and SMU.

Last season, Mason and his Palo Duro HS teammates finished with a record of 29-3 and lost in the Texas 4A State Semifinals. "This upcoming season I want to make it to the State Playoffs again and try to win State. As long as the team wins I have no personal goals."
