The Horns have yet to offer Smith, but he has a great deal of interest in the Longhorn program. "(Defensive Coordinator and Linebackers) Coach (Gene) Chizik is currently recruiting me," Smith said. "I talk to him a good bit. Probably a few times a week. There is a lot of mutual interest between me and Texas." The fact that Chizik ran a very successful linebacker group at Auburn is appealing to Smith. "He's from Auburn and they had a big-time defense last year," Toryan said. "He's a good guy and has a good background. I like his style of coaching."
"Texas goes after the top players," Smith added. "They have a lot of top talent and for them to go out of state and show interest in me, that's impressive."
The school Toryan chooses will consist of a few qualities. "I'm looking at the location of the school," Smith said. "The environment and the community. Football tradition also really matters. I want to go to a big-time program."
What is the timetable for Smith's decision? "I'd like to take my officials and then decide," Toryan said. "I would just like to see what's out there."
Last season, Toryan and his teammates had a great season as they finished 12-1 in the Georgia Class 4A Division. "Last season, I was All-State," Smith said. "That's great and everything, but I just want to get better. I was slowed down a little bit due to a knee injury, but since spring practice I'm back at full-speed. I just want to finish off my senior season with a Championship."
Toryan had 112 tackles last season with 19 being for a loss. He also racked up 8 sacks and had 3 INTs. "I'm a good leader on the field," the Georgia standout said. "I am a dominant force in stopping the run."
