Brian Ellis: Preparing For A Big Season

South Grand Prairie DE Brian Ellis became the 16th commitment for the UT Football Recruiting Class of 2006 back in early April, joining Kenneth Beasley, Hunter Lawrence and Eddie Jones as Spring Game weekend pledges. Ellis spoke to Inside Texas about what he has been doing this summer to prepare for his upcoming season.

Brian Ellis is ranked as a four-star prospect by Scout.com and is ranked as the 9th best DE in the country. Ellis is the 24th-ranked prospect (with a bullet) in the state of Texas.

Since committing to Texas, Ellis (6-4.5, 245, 4.9) has picked up one more offer. "I have received an offer from Oklahoma since I committed to Texas," he told IT. The Oklahoma offer was the fourth offer for Ellis as he had offers from Texas, Oklahoma State and LSU already in hand.

"OU came to my school once, but that's it," Ellis said. "A lot of schools have backed off recruiting me because I'm a solid commit to Texas."

Ellis was recruited to UT by Tight Ends Coach Bruce Chambers. "Coach Chambers recruited me," the Texas standout said. "I like Coach Chambers and he's just a real friendly guy."

"Coach Brown offered me on the last Junior Day," Ellis added. "I said before the camp that if Texas offered me, I was going to commit."

Ellis has been hard at work this summer to prepare for his upcoming season. "I've been lifting weights and running about four times a week," he said. "I haven't maxed out on my bench, but I believe I have increased it."

The big-time DE has always been a fan of the Texas Program. "Texas has been my favorite team since middle school," he said. "I've always liked their football team."

Brian was in attendance at one of UT's June Camps. "The camp was fun," he said. "I met a lot of people who had already committed. I met Sergio Kindle, Eddie Jones, and J'Marcus Webb." One player in particular stood out to Ellis while at the camp. "Eddie Jones was impressive," he said. "We play the same position and he reminds me a lot of myself."

Ellis may decide to take all of his official visits. "I'm not sure about my official visits yet," he said. "I may take them, but if I do, that'll only be for vacation [laughs]. I'm not changing my mind. I'm a solid commit to Texas."

Brian and the rest of his teammates on defense have set a high goal for this season. "We'd like to shut everyone out," he said. "I'd like to get 15 sacks and get us back to the State Playoffs where we were two years ago." Last season, Ellis and his teammates finished with a 6-4 record in the Texas 5A Classification.
