Ellis fumbled after a hit from Briles at the end of his 22-yard reception, drawing the scrimmage to a close. The junior TE also had a false start and a holding call, plus a great block that helped spring Anthony Johnson for 12 yards, to go along with his fumble and three receptions. . . .
On his three field goal attempts, Dusty Mangum came up short on a 37-yard try into a stiff northerly wind and made one from 36 and pushed one just right from 52 with the wind. David Pino and Matt McFadden each nailed their lone attempts on the day, with-the-wind 42- and 41-yarders, respectively. . . .
The Horns only kicked off twice, with Dan Smith sending a pooch punt very short into the wind and Richmond McGee hitting his with-the-wind kickoff to the two. . . .
Brian Bradford punted four times, sending three into-the-wind attempts 26, 33, and 31 yards and his with-the-wind try 42 yards. Justin Smith's into-the-wind efforts traveled 27 and 33 yards and his with-the-wind attempt went about 40 yards in the air and then bounced into the end zone for a 44-yarder. A low snap by Stevens forced Smith to field the ball off the grass and scramble to get off his 27-yarder. "Both snappers (Stevens and Cullen Loeffler) had a bad snap and we put Nick Schroeder in and he did really well," Brown said post-scrimmage, "so we'll put him in the mix of making sure that our snappers are focused when they come out." . . .
Cedric Benson carried the ball just once, squirting through the middle and into the secondary, where safeties Briles and Rufus Harris separated him from the ball after an 11-yard gain. Robin took over for Benson and shared time at tailback with Anthony Johnson. Johnson officially finished with 78 yards on 20 carries while Robin totaled 93 yards on nine rushes. The bulk of Robin's yards came on an up-the-middle 66-yard TD scamper vs. the second-team defense. . . .
Both Mock and Simms worked an option play, with Simms sliding left before pitching to Anthony Johnson for eight yards and Mock running right and opting to keep (for a one-yard gain) rather than pitch to Robin. . . .
Derrick Johnson is typically the one delivering the big hits, but back-up center Will Allen flattened the sophomore linebacker as he pursued Anthony Johnson on what turned into a nine-yard gain. . . .
"We tried to mix the ones and twos a lot today to get a lot of different looks so overall we were really pleased but this will be a good film to try to separate some guys and see who needs to be in that second group and what freshmen we need to look at in the fall," Brown said Tuesday. . . .
The Horns are off Wednesday but will return to Denius Thursday before the final practice of the spring, Saturday's 2 p.m. Spring Game.
