Shipley Will Be 'Game Day' Decision

FL Jordan Shipley’s participation in the home opener against Louisiana-Lafayette will be a "game day" decision, head coach Mack Brown said Tuesday.

"I’d say he’s okay, but I’m not sure about Saturday," Brown said. "I think it will be a game day decision."

Shipley was completely sidelined for almost with a hamstring injury suffered during a non-contact passing drill on August 11.

"This is the first time he’s ever hurt his hamstring that I know of," Brown said, "and hamstrings are just different. They’re really hard to predict. I could sit here and say he wouldn’t be out there and he may be well tomorrow."

I asked Brown about his standard policy for playing an athlete on Saturday if that particular athlete did not practice at full-speed during the week. (Shipley has suited up but has not yet participated in full-contact drills, according to a source close to the program.)

"What we’ve got is a policy where if Ricky Williams can play on Saturday, he can play," Brown replied, "but if other guys who haven’t played very much haven’t practiced, then it’s probably not safe to put them out there and it’s probably not fair to your team. So, we can not make a decision based on what we feel."

Senior Brian Carter enters the season atop the depth chart at flanker, followed by sophomore Nate Jones and Shipley. Shipley, of course, suffered a season-ending torn ACL in August, 2004.
