Selvin Young Cleared, Shipley 'Limited'

RB Selvin Young has been cleared for contact while RS-freshman Jordan Shipley is still "limited" by a hamstring injury suffered more than one month ago, head coach Mack Brown confirmed Monday.

Selvin Young started the first two games of the season but was sidelined during the second half against both UL-Lafayette and Ohio State. The junior did not play against Rice.

"We’ll watch (Young) but we think he’s okay," Brown said, before cautioning, "It’s stupid to say that on Monday because he hasn’t been okay. We’ll watch him all week and see how he is on Thursday."

Young’s absence has led to the emergence of freshman RB Jamaal Charles. The youngster’s 350 yards through the first three games of his career represent the highest total over that span by anyone in program history. He eclipsed Phil Brown’s total of 269 yards, set in 1990. Charles is averaging 8.8 ypc while 13 of his 40 attempts have gone for 10-plus yards. He also ranks second on the team with eight catches for 94 yards this season.

Young has 78 yards on 13 runs (6.0 ypc) this season. Brown has refused to name a starting RB since Texas’ 51-10 win over Rice on Sept. 17. The current depth chart lists ‘Young or Charles’ as the starter.

"We’re going to practice (Young) and let him go," Brown said. "He thinks he’s well. When talking to him last night, he said he’s felt better than he’s felt this year. Hopefully he is because we need him back."

Jordan Shipley was expected to make his collegiate debut against the Owls but was sidelined, again, after his left hamstring tightened about 48 hours before kickoff. Shipley was injured the first week of August camp during a non-contact passing drill. He missed the entire 2004 season after tearing the ACL in his right knee.

"He and Selvin have had similar attitudes in that they’ve probably pushed themselves too hard to get back and haven’t gotten completely well because of their wanting to get back so badly," Brown said. "I don’t think Jordan is ready to go full speed. We’ll still have to watch him during this week. It sounded like (from trainers) this morning that Jordan will be limited some today and Selvin will be ready to go."

Backup LT Tony Hills has not been cleared for contact, Brown added. The sophomore suffered a hyperextended elbow against Rice.
