Augustin Makes It Official, Signs With UT

Prep star D.J. Augustin signed a National Letter of Intent to play basketball next season at Texas, head coach Rick Barnes announced Thursday.

Augustin's signature finalizes a six-man class that is considered a consensus Top Ten recruiting class for Barnes. Scout.com lists Texas at No. 7 nationally in this year's recruiting race. The group includes swingman Kevin Durant (Suitland, Md.), considered the No. 2 pick nationally by most recruiting services.

Forward Matt Hill (Lincoln, Neb.), combo guard Justin Mason (Amarillo), center Dexter Pittman (Rosenberg) and shooting guard Harrison Smith (Houston) also signed with Texas on Wednesday. Augustin (5-11, 180), a point guard from Fort Bend Hightower High School, opted to sign with Texas a day later on his 18th birthday.

"D.J. is a true point guard who makes everyone around him better," Barnes said. "He's got outstanding vision and a good feel for the game. Like each of the five guys who signed yesterday, he's also a really solid person."

Augustin played at Brother Martin High School (New Orleans, La.) during his junior season and averaged 21.2 points and 5.3 assists per contest. He led Brother Martin to back-to-back state titles as a sophomore and junior before his family evacuated to Texas as a result of Hurricane Katrina.

No. 2 Texas tips off the regular season with a home match-up against Southern on Tuesday, Nov. 15 in the opening round of the Guardians Classic. Tip is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Frank Erwin Center.
