Recruiting update: Avery Cleveland

Avery Cleveland may go to school in Austin now, where he plays for the LBJ Jaguars, but the 6-foot 3-inch, 195-pound linebacker said he wants to see some new places.

"I’m trying to get away from home," Cleveland said. "I want to explore some things."

Cleveland named Texas A&M and Colorado atop his list of schools, which also included Miami, Penn State and Alabama. He did say that he would consider Texas, though it is not on his list.

The mystique of the Wrecking Crew defense lures Cleveland toward the Aggies. He likes their defense, which often blitzes the outside linebacker. He said he thinks he can fit in well with the Texas A&M defensive style.

"I’ve got a lot of pride for the game, and a big heart," Cleveland said. "I never give up, and that makes me stand out."

Cleveland visited College Station for "Junior Day" in January, and met Texas A&M head coach R.C. Slocum and defensive back Sammy Davis.

"He’s pretty cool," Cleveland said of Slocum. "He takes care of his players. I like that about a coach."

Prior to that visit, Cleveland said Texas A&M was his second choice behind Florida State, but A&M jumped to No. 1 afterwards.

He plans on going back to Texas A&M for a weeklong camp this summer.

Cleveland said he will attend a minicamp at UT this summer, as well.

He said he plans on taking his time to choose a school, so he can visit Colorado and some of the other schools on his list.
