Hoops: Dion Dowell Elects to Transfer

Texas sophomore forward Dion Dowell has elected to transfer, head coach Rick Barnes announced Monday.

"Dion voiced concerns about his playing time now and in the future within our program," Barnes said, "and he feels he'll have a better opportunity to make that happen at another school. We wish Dion all the best in the future."

Dowell (6-6, 205) had played in three games this season and averaged 3.0 points and 2.3 rebounds in 15.3 minutes per contest. He missed seven games due to an injured right ankle sustained in practice on Nov. 18, but returned to play 14 minutes off the bench in Saturday's loss to Tennessee.

As a freshman in 2004-05, Dowell played in 19 games, making seven starts, and averaged 2.1 points and 1.4 rebounds in 10.4 minutes per contest.

The Horns fell to No. 15 in the latest Coaches Poll (USA Today) released Monday. Texas (8-2) returns to action on Thursday, Dec. 22 when it hosts Texas State (1-7) at the Erwin Center. Tip is set for 7 p.m. The game will be televised in the state of Texas only on Fox Sports Southwest.
