Baseball: Horns to host regional

Texas, winner of both the Big 12 regular season and tournament championships, earned one of the coveted top eight national seeds as well as a hosting spot in the upcoming NCAA Baseball Tournament.

The Horns (48-14) are the No. 5 seed in the tournament and the top seed in the Austin regional that also includes No. 2 seed Baylor (34-24), No. 3 seed Lamar (35-22) and No. 4 seed Central Connecticut State (34-21). Texas will open its run for the CWS on Friday at the Disch with the Blue Devils, the Northeast Conference Tournament champions who are making their first-ever NCAA appearance.

The winner of the Austin regional will face the winner of the Arizona State regional, which includes No. 1 seed Houston, No. 2 seed ASU, No. 3 seed San Diego State and No. 4 seed New Mexico State, in a Super Regional the following weekend to determine one of the eight Omaha-bound teams.

Aside from UT and Baylor, three other Big 12 teams made the field of 64. Nebraska will host a regional as a No. 1 seed, while Texas Tech will travel to the Rice regional in Houston as a No. 2 seed and Oklahoma will play in the Wichita State regional as a No. 2 seed. Oklahoma State and Texas A&M, squads that the Horns eliminated from the Big 12 Tournament in Arlington over the weekend, did not receive at-large bids.

Florida State is the national No. 1 seed, followed by No. 2 Clemson, No. 3 Alabama, No. 4 Rice, No. 5 Texas, No. 6 South Carolina, No. 7 Wake Forest and No. 8 Stanford.
