Here's our latest look at what the Horns' Class of '07 Signing Day positional breakdown may look like (for this exercise, we've used the high end potential class size of 22), with position, number of projected takes, current commits and top remaining prospects (also see our 2006 Roster Table for a positional breakdown of the entire '06 squad plus the '07 class):
QB: 2 Commits (2): Mansfield Summit's John Chiles, Ocala, Florida's John Brantley. Top remaining prospects: none. Note: At one time, Texarkana's Ryan Mallett (offer) was at the top of the Longhorn list, but the early commitment from Chiles, and then the mutual interest in Brantley and, ultimately, his pledge, left Mallett out of the equation. Because Chiles has been told by the Texas coaches that he could also work at receiver to see the field earlier than at QB, the Horns will almost certainly remain in contact with and continue to evaluate other prospects (like Junior Day attendee Gilbert Moye of Jasper), but it's also very possible that Texas is done at signalcaller.
RB: 3 Commits (2): Pearland's Foswhitt Whitaker, Waller's Cody Johnson. Top remaining prospects: Tatum's Lennon Creer (offer). Note: Although Creer took in Oklahoma's Spring Game last weekend and also plans to visit LSU, all signs point to a Longhorn pledge once he gets his mom to Austin for a Forty Acres visit. When that happens, the Horns are probably done at the position. If for whatever reason things change with Creer, a name to keep an eye on is national five-star prospect John Clay from Racine, Wisconsin. Although the Badgers are favored for his signature, he's said that Texas would jump to the top of his list if the Horns offered. More on Creer and the RB situation.
WR: 1 Commits (1): Garland's Malcolm Williams. Top remaining prospects: Pflugerville Hendrickson's Joseph Reese (offer). Note: With Williams giving a late-March Junior Day pledge, the only question is whether Reese is still a possibility (perhaps as an athlete) and if further evaluation leads to an offer to Round Rock's James Kirkendoll.
OL: 6 Commits (6): Austin Westlake's Matt Nader, Vidor's Jerrod Gooch, Aledo's Kyle Hix, La Marque's Aundre McGaskey, Kilgore's Michael Huey, South Grand Prairie's Tray Allen. Top remaining prospects: none.
DE: 2 Commits (1): Houston Westbury's Russell Carter. Top remaining prospects: Dallas Lincoln's Richetti Jones (offer). Note: Jones didn't make it to Austin for the Spring Game as expected and he did take in A&M's Spring Game in College Station. So, should Orangebloods be worried? Doubtful. If Jones, one of the top overall prospects in the state, ends up in the Orange and White as expected, UT's recruiting at this spot would almost certainly be wrapped up.
DT: 1 Commits (1): El Paso Andress' Andre Jones. Top remaining prospects: Still being evaluated. Note: While the coaches are sure to continue to evaluate state of Texas prospects during April and summer camp season, this is a spot that the Horns could look out of state for a national-level talent if the coaches decide there's room for another DT in this class.
LB: 1 Commits (1): Plano West's Keenan Robinson. Top remaining prospects: Derrick Stephens (offer, A&M commit). Note: Through early evaluation, Robinson and Stephens were clearly the top two prospects in the state, and Texas would obviously like to land both of them. If they do, they could well be done here. And given the number of pledges overall, plus the outstanding offers at other positions, the Horns might even be done with just Robinson.
DB: 4 Commits (3): Gilmer's Curtis Brown, West Orange-Stark's Earl Thomas, Beaumont Ozen's Ben Wells. Top remaining prospects: Mobile, Ala.'s Phelon Jones (offer), La Marque's James Thomas. Note: Jones picked up an offer from the Horns two weeks ago after Duane Akina and Mack Brown reviewed film.
K: 0 Commits (0): none. Top remaining prospects: none.
