Arkansas, TCU Top Future Football Foes

A home-and-home-series with former Southwest Conference rival Arkansas, as well as a visit from former SWC foe TCU, headlines a group of future University of Texas football match-ups, it was announced Monday.

The Longhorns will host the Razorbacks on September 13, 2008 and make a return visit to Fayetteville on September 12, 2009. Texas filled a non-conference date for 2007 with a home meeting against TCU on September 8. Additional match-ups include series against Central Florida, UTEP and Rice.

Texas holds a 55-21 advantage in the series against Arkansas that began in 1894. The former bitter rivals have met just three times since the Razorbacks departed for the Southeastern Conference in 1992. The Hogs owned a three-game winning streak, including a 14-13 win in Fayetville in 1991 and a 27-6 Cotton Bowl upset in 2000, before DT Larry Dibbles late fumble recovery preserved a 22-20 Longhorn win at Fayetville in 2004. Arkansas' 38-28 win in 2003 is Texas' only home loss of this millennium. Texas coach Mack Brown lobbied heavily for the home-and-home series in 2003-04 during his first year at Texas because, a) he saw it was a way to revive public interest in the Longhorn program by scheduling a former rival and, b) he wanted to honor coaching legends Darrell Royal and Frank Broyles.

Texas and TCU have not played since the final year of the SWC in 1995, but they have met 81 times in a series dating back to 1897. The Horns have won 60 of those contests. TCU's last win in the series was a 23-14 shocker in 1992 during John Mackovic's first season in Austin. The Horns had won 24 straight prior to that upset in Fort Worth. The Horned Frogs program is on the upswing after finishing the 2005 season at No. 9 (USA Today) and No. 11 (Associated Press). TCU began the season with a 17-10 win at Oklahoma and polished off the 11-1 campaign with a 27-24 comeback against Iowa State in the EV1.net Houston Bowl. It was the Horned Frogs' best finish since 1959.

The Longhorns will travel to UT-El Paso on September 6, 2008 and the Miners are scheduled to visit Austin on Sept. 26, 2009. It will be the first meeting between Texas and UTEP in football.

Texas has also agreed to a three-game series with the University of Central Florida in 2007, 2009 and 2011. Texas is scheduled to travel to UCF on Sept. 15, 2007 while the Golden Knights will visit Austin on Sept. 19, 2009 and Sept. 26, 2011. Texas and UCF have never played.

The Longhorns had previously announced a home-and-home series with UCLA in 2010 and 2011 and extended its series with Rice to include games in Houston in 2010 and Austin in 2011 and 2013.

LONGHORN FUTURE SCHEDULES Big 12 Conference games beyond the 2008 have not been set. But you can pencil-in Oklahoma for the second Saturday in October (at the Cotton Bowl) for the remainder of the decade. You can also count on the regular season finale against Texas A&M. Colorado, Kansas and Missouri should rotate back on the schedule in 2008 and 2009.
