Playing time outlook: Running back

IT's position-by-position capsule look at the probable fall playing time rotation as well as a glimpse at possible freshman contributors for the Horns continues. Today's installment: running back.

Tailback rotation pattern: Cedric Benson will start and should get close to 30 carries and two receptions per game, as he did through the final half of the '01 season. Brett Robin will also remain in his late '01 season role as a third-down, long-yardage back that carries the ball approximately once and catches a pass or two (shovel and dump-off passes) per game. All that is relatively certain. What's uncertain is how Ivan Williams, who missed spring while recovering from surgery, and redshirt freshman Anthony Johnson will fit in. Early in '01, Victor Ike, who has since transferred, and Williams rotated at tailback with Benson coming in as the No. 3 back. With Benson the clear-cut No. 1 this fall, it's unlikely that Williams or Johnson will see many carries until a game is relatively in hand. And until two-a-days, we probably won't know whether Johnson, who had a fantastic spring, or Williams will be the first off the bench to spell Benson. True freshman PT? Doubtful.
