Playing time outlook: Fullback

IT's position-by-position capsule look at the probable fall playing time rotation as well as a glimpse at possible freshman contributors for the Horns continues. Today's installment: fullback.

Fullback rotation pattern: Matt Trissel will start, but both Brock Edwards and Will Matthews should see meaningful snaps. Matter of fact, a similar rotation to that of the '01 season is likely to emerge. Last fall, Trissel started but Chad Stevens played a large number of snaps, including early-game snaps (even first offensive series snaps), and both Edwards and Matthews are candidates to do the same this fall. Edwards' responsibilities will include more TE-like pass catching duties while Trissel and Matthews will fill the more traditional Greg Davis fullback role. Regardless of who's in the game, the fullback will probably play a slightly larger role in the offense this fall. In '01, the fullback position combined for six receptions (five for Trissel and one for Matthews) and exactly zero rushes. Although the rushing total is unlikely to climb much past zero, the reception figure should increase substantially, possibly as high as an average of two per game based on spring results. True freshman PT? Doubtful.
