When the eight national seeds for the NCAA baseball playoffs flashed onto six large screens at Moncrief-Neuhaus complex Monday, there was more of a sense of relief from the Texas Longhorns. If the University of Texas women are to defend their NCAA outdoor track and field team title, they'll have to do it without sprint star Marshevet Hooker in the 100- and 200-meter dashes. Coach Bev Kearney said Monday she does not plan to appeal the NCAA's exclusion of Hooker in the short sprints. Hooker collapsed about 60 meters into the 100 at Saturday's Midwest Regionals, and under NCAA rules an athlete who does not start and finish an event at the regionals is ineligible for the national meet. Lawmakers given free Texas football tickets

Tickets to University of Texas football games may be out of reach for some fans, but state and federal lawmakers have routinely taken the opportunity to attend games at no cost, according to a newspaper report. The UT System gave the elected officials 1,962 free or discounted tickets to UT football games during the past five seasons, according to records obtained by the Austin American-Statesman under the Texas Public Information Act.
