Coaches Poll: Ohio State No.1, Texas No. 2

The Texas-Ohio State showdown on September 9 just got even bigger. The Buckeyes are the top-ranked team in the preseason USA-Today (coaches) poll released Friday while the defending national champ Longhorns are No. 2.

The tilt will mark the first time that the nation's top two college teams collide at Memorial Stadium in Austin. The Longhorns have faced the No. 1 team (in the AP poll) just 12 times in program history, winning four of those match-ups. Prior to Texas' 41-38 Rose Bowl win over USC on January 6, the Horns previous triumph against a top-ranked foe was the 21-17 thriller against QB Joe Namath and Alabama in the 1965 Orange Bowl.

However, Texas is a perfect 4-0 in No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchups (AP Poll) and went on to claim the national championship. In addition to the 2006 Rose Bowl, No.1 Texas beat No. 2 Arkansas, 15-14, in 1969; No. 1 Texas beat No. 2 Navy 28-6 in the 1964 Cotton Bowl; No. 2 Texas beat No. Oklahoma, 28-7, in 1963.

The Buckeyes generated 1,487 points on the strength of 28 first-place votes. Texas received 1,378 points and 11 first-place ballots. Pollsters were obviously not deterred by the fact that Ohio State returns just two defensive starters while no Texas QB has logged a collegiate snap. The Texas-Ohio State game will be part of new ABC-Sports 'Saturday Night Football' series, featuring top match-ups in primetime throughout the regular season.

Other Big 12 Conference listed in the preseason poll are No. 5 Oklahoma, No. 22 Nebraska and and No. 25 Texas Tech.
