Ohio State Game Report Cards

IT's Coaches Corner Moderator Mike Venable grades the Longhorn performances in the 24-7 loss to Ohio State.

It's hard to believe the Horns only scored seven points when you see how well we blocked and ran the ball. We never broke the big one but we hammered out a bunch of five through twelve yarders while controlling the LOS with our offensive line. Both RB's supplied nifty moves while piling up yardage but weren't able to get into the end zone. We played very well most of the time but somehow managed to shoot ourselves in the foot before we finished off a drive. The bottom line is we couldn't make the plays when we needed to for a variety of reasons.

Offensive Report Card

The good news is we held the number 1 football team in the nation to twenty four points in a hard fought battle before a full house of orange faithful. Most of us probably hoped for a slightly smaller number but since they scored twenty two last year I think twenty four was a very realistic number if we are totally honest with ourselves.

The Coaches Corner is available exclusively to InsideTexas.com subscribers. The forum is a place to ask questions of our resident coaches and talk about Xs and Os, schemes, gameplans, offensive and defensive theories, etc. Basically, it is a teaching and learning forum to make us all more knowledgable football fans, both in general and specifically about the Longhorn football team. Venable spent 30 years as the DC and LB coach at five Texas high schools (Lancaster, Duncanville, Pasadena Sam Rayburn, Carrollton Turner, and The Colony) before retiring in 2000. Four of his former players played at UT (Mike Williams, Steve Massey, Jimmy Johnson, and Doug Livingston) and around twenty are currently coaching in Texas high schools.
