Iowa State receiver to be a handful for Texas
Watching Iowa State's Todd Blythe stride down the sideline so effortlessly last season against Texas A&M got the attention of the Texas Longhorns. But because the Cyclones were not on the Longhorns' schedule, the Texas secondary was spared from having to prepare for one of the Big 12 Conference's most explosive wideouts. There will be no such break this time around.
Notebook: Texas sticking with Johnson
Texas coach Mack Brown said Wednesday that if he needs to spell kicking specialist Greg Johnson, he'll do it with walk-on Justin Moore. The thinking is that Brown can redshirt freshman Hunter Lawrence, who has yet to play this season.
Buckeyes taught UT safety a lesson
Dallas Morning News
Texas senior strong safety Michael Griffin was touted in his team's media guide as a Bednarik, Nagurski and Lott trophy candidate before the season. And why not? He led Texas in tackles last season and had one of the biggest plays in the Rose Bowl, intercepting USC quarterback Matt Leinart in the end zone. But against Ohio State two weeks ago, in a game that was supposed to showcase Griffin and Texas' veteran secondary, everything went wrong.
UT CB Ross in shadow of girlfriend Richards
Dallas Morning News
Texas senior cornerback Aaron Ross gets nothing but grief from coaches and teammates about being in the shadow of his girlfriend, 400-meter track star Sanya Richards. Tony Hills signed with Texas as one of the best tight end prospects in the country. Three years later, he hasn't caught a pass. But no worries. Instead of bowling over defensive backs in the secondary, Hills is now firmly entrenched at left tackle and could develop into the next Longhorns All-American on the offensive line.
Longhorns' Cosby changes gears
Cedar Rapids Gazette
The last time most Cedar Rapidians heard of Quan Cosby was the summer of 2004. He wrapped up his second consecutive season of batting .249 for the Cedar Rapids Kernels. As far as anyone knew, the outfielder would head to minor-league spring training the following March and then play for Rancho Cucamonga (Calif.), the next step on the Los Angeles Angels' organizational ladder. Cosby made it to spring training. But instead of going to Rancho, he ended up in Austin, Texas … as a college football player for the Texas Longhorns.
ISU's Flynn has personal NFL cheerleader
Des Moines Register
They're teasing Austin Flynn around the Iowa State football complex this week. The receiver's girlfriend will attend Saturday's 2:30 p.m. Big 12 Conference game at Texas. And in case his teammates didn't know it, cornerback DeAndre Jackson reminded them Sunday that she is a member of the Houston Texans cheerleading squad.
Big Time DE Prospect at Fossil Ridge
R.J. Washington from Keller Fossil Ridge High School in Texas has the potential to be one of the top five defensive end prospects for the class of 2008. He has all the tools to take over and dominate a football game. Several Big 12 schools are already paying Washington a lot of attention. Head Coach Hal Wasson raved about his stud defensive end.
