Oklahoma State Game Report Cards

IT's Coaches Corner Moderator Mike Venable grades the Longhorn performances in the 36-10 win over Oklahoma State.

UT played a good old fashioned game of keep-away against the Cowboys last night as they controlled possession for over two thirds of the game. The Cowboys used several safety blitzes to stymie the running game but were torched for around 350 yards through the air as the Horns blazed the airways. The OLine spent a frustrating evening crowded with twists, slants, gap stunts, and a total disrespect for any misdirection as they battled a huge disadvantage in numbers and overplayed formation techniques. We threw the ball very well. We had a great night receiving and were able to convert several short passes into big gains with the YAC's that our playmakers are providing weekly. The RB's had limited success against the stunting defenses that often just outnumbered our blockers---once we fired a couple of reverses at them we found more lanes to explore as they slowed down backside pursuit. Here are the grades:

Offensive Report Card

We witnessed a quality defensive performance from our bunch last night as they limited a quality Cowboys offense to one field goal against the Horn defense. Playing fewer than forty snaps helps any defense and having the opponents make numerous mistakes, penalities, and taking the ground game away from them usually means a low score against you. We had some individual players raise their performance up a notch and we were very physical all night as we flew around with an attitude. There is no doubt that our offense helped with time of possession domination but the defense can be proud of their effort this week. Here are the grades:

The Coaches Corner is available exclusively to InsideTexas.com subscribers. The forum is a place to ask questions of our resident coaches and talk about Xs and Os, schemes, gameplans, offensive and defensive theories, etc. Basically, it is a teaching and learning forum to make us all more knowledgable football fans, both in general and specifically about the Longhorn football team. Venable spent 30 years as the DC and LB coach at five Texas high schools (Lancaster, Duncanville, Pasadena Sam Rayburn, Carrollton Turner, and The Colony) before retiring in 2000. Four of his former players played at UT (Mike Williams, Steve Massey, Jimmy Johnson, and Doug Livingston) and around twenty are currently coaching in Texas high schools.
