Teams Still Scheming to Stop Texas' Run Game
Ten games into the season, defenses are still selling out to try to stop Texas' ground game. The result: Colt McCoy is rewriting school, and national, passing marks for freshmen quarterbacks.

Aaron Ross enjoyed another highlight video moment in the second half against Oklahoma State. It came together because the Texas cornerback was heady enough to recognize the play and talented enough to do something about it.

Texas redshirt freshman quarterback Colt McCoy said that Ohio State quarterback Troy Smith has the Heisman Trophy "sewed up" if the top-ranked Buckeyes keep winning.

Texas can clinch Big 12 South on Saturday
Dallas Morning News
Texas players and coaches say they are excited about the possibility of clinching the Big 12 South title Saturday night at Kansas State.

Could McCoy orchestrate the fall of Troy?
San Antonio Express-News
The question at first made Texas quarterback Colt McCoy giggle. Then, it made him blush. What does it feel like, he was asked after another stellar outing in beating Oklahoma State on Saturday, to be a freshman Heisman Trophy candidate? Might as well have asked him what it might feel like to walk on the moon.

Comparison of McCoy to Applewhite only goes so far
San Antonio Express-News
Colt McCoy has been compared to Major Applewhite almost down to the freckle. For the record, Applewhite had more, though McCoy now has him beat in touchdown passes as a freshman with 27, a school record. Advantage, McCoy. What remains to be seen is whether McCoy can avoid the harshest comparison to one of the greatest and best-loved quarterbacks in Longhorn history.

UT looks for style points in 'playoff' run
Fort Worth Star-Telegram
Texas players say the Longhorns' jump to fifth in this week's BCS standings should assure an inspired effort in Saturday's game against Kansas State. The Longhorns (9-1, 6-0 in Big 12), who were seventh in last week's standings, need to improve three more spots by Dec. 3 to play for a second consecutive national championship. That opportunity, said defensive tackle Frank Okam, means Texas will be seeking style points and looking to send a message to poll voters in Manhattan, Kan., against the Wildcats (6-4, 3-3).

Texas can boast of great depth in its receiving corps
Houston Chronicle
Texas offensive coordinator Greg Davis has so many wide receivers at his disposal, it's hard to keep track of who's who. On the team bus after a recent game against Texas Tech, Davis was praising a 16-yard touchdown by Billy Pittman with wide receivers coach Bobby Kennedy. Only one problem: Nate Jones made the catch.

Longhorns can't get caught napping
Daily Texan
Hold the phone. Don't call in your hotel reservations for Tempe, Ariz., just yet. All the talk about an Ohio State rematch or a berth in the Fiesta Bowl is nice, but the Longhorns haven't done anything yet. Even though Texas is by far the best team in the conference, they still have a Big 12 title to win. And contrary to popular belief, that won't be easy.

From the gridiron to the Pilates mat? Don't laugh. Chances are Longhorns football players are on their way to their weight room right now, mats in hand..

Texas defense getting better
Associated Press
After three weeks of miscues as Texas rallied for victories, the Longhorns' defense turned in a dominant performance against Oklahoma State. Fourth-ranked Texas played its best defensive game of the season in the 36-10 win Saturday night, a huge turnaround for a unit that was giving up passing yards and touchdowns by the bushel.

Football recruiting:

Justin Williams: Following in Brother's Foots
South Grand Prairie High School in Grand Prairie (Texas) produces at least one highly recruited Division I prospect every year. This year, Longhorn commit Tray Allen is the best prospect inside the state of Texas. In the class of 2006, Malcolm Williams was one of the most feared defensive prospects in the state. His little brother, Justin Williams, should be highly recruited in 2008.

Texas Basketball Wins Final Tune-up
In their second and final exhibition game, the Longhorns took on Xavier (no, not that Xavier) at the Erwin Center on Monday night, coming away with a 103-53 win over Division II Xavier of Louisiana.

Longhorns rout NAIA school Xavier in exhibition
Austin American-Statesman
Rick Barnes was a lot kinder to Dannton Jackson when the Xavier coach was without a team. When the New Orleans school's 2005-06 season was wiped out by Hurricane Katrina, Barnes helped Jackson stay involved in basketball. The Texas coach and his assistant, Russell Springmann, sent Jackson practice tapes and manuals to replace those damaged by the hurricane. They kept in touch by phone.

Abrams stands out; Texas tops Xavier
Daily Texan
If A.J. Abrams could choose, he probably would be taking most of his shots in a different spot. Despite his preference, Abrams tends to find himself shooting more from the corner - not that he really minds with the way he's shooting the ball right now. In fact, it has probably helped him return to the type of player he was in high school.
