Football:

McCoy, Ross Writing Storybook Endings

Can a RS-freshman quarterback, playing in the shadow of a Longhorn legend, get an invite to the Heisman Trophy ceremony in New York next month? Can a cornerback playing for the nation's No. 106 pass defense, and who failed to make any preseason Watch Lists, be the frontrunner for the Thorpe Award honoring the nation's top defensive back?

Melton Spending More Time At DE

Sophomore RB Henry Melton is taking at least three-quarters of his practice snaps at DE, Texas coach Mack Brown said Monday.

Culpepper's Commentary: Oklahoma State Game
InsideTexas.com
Now, this Texas team could challenge Ohio State! Finally! What we should understand is that Oklahoma State is a good football team. At the end of the first quarter the score was Longhorns 3, Cowboys 0, and the reason for that was a tough defense by Oklahoma State.

McCoy's early winning sets another precedent
Austin American-Statesman
Small-school prodigy Colt McCoy was a three-star recruiting bargain. He committed early to Texas, but most of the praise for the Longhorns' 2005 class was heaped on the higher-profile, five-star prospects.

In long run, it's UT's McCoy
Dallas Morning News
Coach Mack Brown considers it one of the mysteries of the Texas season: Why haven't the Longhorns been able to pop more long runs?

Passing, punting ... and Pilates?
San Antonio Express-News
For the most part, the Texas Longhorns' strength and conditioning program resembles that of roughly every other team in America. They lift weights. They run wind sprints. They hit blocking sleds. They do Pilates. Wait, what? Pilates?

QB's night-to-day improvement has excited KSU
San Antonio Express-News
Kansas State's season hung in the balance when coach Ron Prince made a critical decision after losing his first conference game. Switching from senior starter Dylan Meier to freshman quarterback Josh Freeman would pay long-term dividends by getting the heralded recruit early playing experience. But it wasn't necessarily expected to result in much immediate success on the field. But after back-to-back victories have pushed the Wildcats to unexpected bowl eligibility, Prince's gamble appears to have paid off handsomely.

UT's Blalock a Lombardi finalist
Houston Chronicle
The Rotary Lombardi Award has come down to the Big 12 vs. the Big Ten. Texas offensive lineman Justin Blalock was among the finalists, all seniors, announced Tuesday. Heisman shot for Texas' Colt?

Ross the rock for Longhorns
Kerrville Times
Between the bumps and bruises, the embarrassing numbers and low rankings, the Texas secondary has taken its share of hits this season. But above it all, Aaron Ross has continued to shine.

Tout your own 'Horn, Mack, and lobby for Colt
CBSSportsline.com
The program that gave Bevo its own air-conditioned trailer apparently won't be pushing its record-breaking quarterback for the Heisman. You wonder what Texas' motivation -- or lack thereof -- is in not promoting Colt McCoy for the sport's most prestigious award. Forget McCoy's actual chances of winning, coach Mack Brown basically pooh-poohed his redshirt freshman's eligibility for the award over the weekend.

Hoops:

UT's Durant: Righteous talent
Dallas Morning News
Wanda Pratt couldn't care less that her son, Texas freshman Kevin Durant, has already met LeBron James and Michael Jordan. Or that he was the co-MVP of both the McDonald's All-American game and the Jordan All-American Classic at Madison Square Garden this year. She is more excited about how her son, who probably would have been considered for the No. 1 pick had he been eligible for the NBA draft last June, ran to grab a bag of ice when a Texas basketball manager fell and sprained his ankle in a pickup game recently. Or about how Kevin has chosen to wear No. 35 to honor one of his childhood mentors, Charles Craig, who was murdered at age 35 a few years ago.

Women's hoops:

Cortijo healthy, Longhorns ready for opener
Austin American-Statesman
Even when she was exhausted, when she couldn't keep her hands off her knees or her lungs from gasping for oxygen, Carla Cortijo still pushed herself. That's what you do when you're seeing significant playing time for the first time in a year. The redshirt freshman showed Tuesday night why the Longhorns are looking to her as this season's point guard, helping Texas to a 78-29 exhibition victory over Trinity in the Longhorns' final preseason tuneup.

Brittainey Raven didn't start the game, but she sure knew what to do when she got in. The Texas freshman played significant minutes off the bench Tuesday, contributing heavily on offense while helping the Longhorns to a 78-29 exhibition win over Trinity at the Frank Erwin Center.
