McCoy: 'I'm Going to be Fine'

The loss to Kansas State was a total, unmitigated disaster. Given the earlier upsets in the day, Florida's scare from South Carolina and the possibility that the Longhorns could reach No. 3 in the BCS standings with a win, the consequences of the defeat cannot be overstated.

It took just more than 3 minutes for Kansas State to score 21 points and break open a game against Texas that eventually became a 45-42 upset, one of the biggest in the college ranks this season. The critical span in the third quarter shouldn't have been a surprise, since it summed up what's gone wrong for the Longhorns all season.

UT losing its grip with fumble problems

Kansas State scored 21 third-quarter points in a span of three minutes, six seconds during Saturday's win over Texas. The avalanche was helped by fumbles on back-to-back drives by UT running backs Jamaal Charles and Selvin Young, which both led to K-State touchdowns. Texas also suffered a blocked punt for the first time in 36 games, which led to the third score.

Fixing secondary is primary for UT

Texas coach Mack Brown said Monday that, during the Longhorns' bye week, changes could be made to shore up a pass defense ranked 108th among the 119 football teams in NCAA Division I-A. Brown did not offer specifics but said defensive coaches would "talk later this week about some of the changes we're thinking about."

The bye week came in the nick of time for the Longhorns, who are nursing injuries to two offensive starters. Colt McCoy and Justin Blalock were both injured in Texas' 45-42 loss at Kansas State on Saturday. Both will continue to be evaluated during the week according to a statement released by the team.

Kansas State beating Texas was an upset. What it shouldn't be is a surprise. For two months, it was easy to get caught up in the fun of watching freshman quarterback Colt McCoy lead the Longhorns back into national title contention. But one didn't have to dig very deep to start peeling back the layers and expose a struggling defense.

Alief Elsik High School is home to a very versatile running back. Jeremy Hills put together an outstanding junior season both running and catching the football. He is the younger brother of current Texas standout, Tony Hills. Head Coach Bill Barron raved about the ability of his star junior prospect. teams are grooming themselves for the postseason, the timing didn't help either.

Clutch 3 changes game for Texas

Katrina Robinson had never made a 3-point shot in her collegiate career. But with the shot clock winding down against Louisiana-Lafayette and the offense struggling, Erika Arriaran whipped the ball to the 6-foot-2-inch forward just behind the arch. As time expired, the senior hoisted a shot and found nothing but the bottom of the net. The shot put the Longhorns on top 48-43 just moments after they had lost the lead, and the rejuvenated offense didn't give it up again, prevailing 69-59 at the Erwin Center Monday night.


SL Carroll's Dodge open to collegiate return

Southlake Carroll coach and former UNT assistant Todd Dodge said Monday he would consider taking a college coaching job after the current season.
