The game started slow for Texas, falling behind 13-2. But a three pointer by Kevin Durant got the scoring started for the Horns with a three-pointer and Texas very quickly made up ground, going on a 17-4 run to take a 19-17 lead.
The scoring came in bursts throughout the night for both teams. Texas continued their burst in the first half to go up 38-28 with 6:00 minutes left in the first half.
Then the Red Storm started a run of their own, catching right back up with the runnin' Horns.
For all the back and forth in the first frame, the game was closing going into halftime with the Red Storm holding a 45-44 advantage.
It was a sharp-shooting game for both squads from behind the three-point arc. Texas finished 10-18 (55.6%) and St. John's was 11-21 (52.4%).
In the second half, it was the Longhorns turn to start off on the right foot, taking a 10 point lead. Midway through the second half, St. John's tied it up at 60 and it was back and forth from that point, all the way down to the final seconds, when D.J. Augustin's driving lay-up gave Texas a 77-73 lead and held of St. John's to finish out the match.
The Horns return home to the Erwin Center to take on Nicholls State on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
