Chiles, a quarterback from Mansfield Summit, will play in Saturday's U.S. Army All-American Bowl — just as Young did in 2002. He'll copy Young's career path when he goes to Texas next year — with one major difference. He wants more.

Sheppard is the second member of the Texas staff to follow Iowa State coach Gene Chizik, the former Longhorns defensive coordinator, to Ames. Chizik has also hired Texas graduate assistant Jeff Koonz as an assistant coach.

Dexter Pittman has met a deadline for weight loss, and the Longhorns center celebrated by buying some new clothes. The 6-foot-10-inch freshman reached his goal of 290 pounds by the beginning of Big 12 basketball competition, which starts Saturday for the Longhorns at Colorado.

"We've played on the road," Barnes answered brusquely. "I'd be surprised if they didn't handle it well." Barnes, of course, is right. But only sort of.
